  12.      This is Release 10.9 of the UMS distribution.
  13.      About 20 of the included packages have been updated since 10.8
  14.      and a couple of bugs in the installer script have been fixed.
  15.  
  16.      IMPORTANT: There are still a few updates and new packages that
  17.                 did not make it into this release! Most important,
  18.                 the included Maus and Z-Netz drivers are *not* the
  19.                 current releases. You have to get and install these
  20.                 separately. Sorry for the inconvenience.

  22. DESCRIPTION
  23.  
  24.      The  Universal  Message  System  (short  "UMS")  is a system for
  25.      managing   all  kinds  of  messages  ('e-mail'  and  'news')  as
  26.      universally and efficiently as possible.
  27.  
  28.      It  uses  its own, network-independent format, thus allowing the
  29.      user,  the  'newsreader'-  and  tool-programs  to read and treat
  30.      messages from different networks in a unified way.
  31.  
  32.      Special  programs  called  'importers' and 'exporters' deal with
  33.      the  specific  formats  of  all  these networks. In this release
  34.      importers/exporters are supplied for QWK, UUCP, FidoNet, Mausnet
  35.      (German) and Z-Net (German) as well as for a proprietary format.
  36.  
  37.      UMS supports multiple users and manages individual access-rights
  38.      for each user.
  39.  
  40.      UMS  provides  a  common interface ("ums.library") for access to
  41.      the  message-base,  which  is  used by all programs dealing with
  42.      UMS.
  43.  
  44.      Developer-material for using UMS in Amiga-Oberon, ARexx, C and
  45.      Modula-2 is included in this package.
  46.  
  47.      Also included:

  49.       - all binaries and tools needed for the central data-base
  50.  
  51.       - two 'newsreaders' for reading and writing news and mail.
  52.      One very nice and intuitive one (needs MUI), and one "not-so-
  53.      intuitive" one that works on every Amiga- or VT100-console.
  54.  
  55.       - many  tools  that are useful and/or intructive in how to  use
  56.      UMS and write other tools.
  57.  
  58.       - an  Installer  ((c) Commodore-Amiga, Inc.) script to  install
  59.      UMS  with  any  of  the above networks in a simple setup (i.e. a
  60.      "point"- or "leaf"-node).
